Make the most of your HRA: A guide to claims, cards and more

A health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) is an employer-funded account that reimburses you for qualified medical expenses, making it a great way to stretch the value of your health care dollars.

Learn what’s eligible and how to submit an HRA claim

Here’s an overview of how to use your HRA and how claim reimbursement works:

  • Your employer defines eligible expenses and the reimbursement amount.
  • Common eligible expenses include copays, prescriptions, medical equipment and more. Check your plan details or use our eligibility tool to find qualifying expenses.
  • You pay for eligible expenses out of pocket or through your online account.
  • To get reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses, you need to submit a claim.
  • Claims are usually processed in 3–5 business days. You’ll be notified when your claim is approved.

Filing an HRA claim is easy

To get started, sign in to your account via the app or member portal and navigate to the claims section. Select the “reimburse myself” button, then fill in the requested information. To file by mail, simply download the form you need, fill it out and mail it.

Avoid delays: Submit the correct documents for HRA reimbursement

Providing all required details is the best way to get your claim approved and paid faster. It must include:

  1. Name of the service provider
  2. Name of the person who received the item/service
  3. Description of service
  4. Date of service (not the date payment was made)
  5. Amount charged (not amount paid)

Once you’ve entered all requested information and/or documentation, review your claim carefully, then submit it. Once your claim is approved, you’ll get funds fast — typically 2 to 4 days for direct deposit and 7 to 10 days for a paper check.

Skip the paperwork by using your HRA payment card

When you use your HRA payment card to pay for eligible expenses, you generally don’t need to submit receipts. Just know that certain purchases require documentation, so always keep your receipts.

Check your HRA balance and more on the go

If you’re wondering how much is in your HRA, the Optum Bank mobile app makes it easy to stay on top of your funds. You can:

  • Track spending and the status of your claim and reimbursements.
  • See recent transactions.
  • Report a lost or stolen card or request a replacement card.
