2020 tax filing and payment and HSA contribution deadlines extended
The federal income tax filing and payments deadline – and as a result the HSA contribution deadline – has been extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021 (or to June 15 for TX, OK and LA).
Using your health account dollars
An HSA is like no other savings account. The money goes in on a pre-taxed basis through payroll contributions, grows income tax-free and comes out income tax-free when you use it for qualified medical expenses. Plus, you can carry over unused available funds from year to year and the account is yours to keep even if you change jobs, change health plans or retire.

Start 2021 off smart
Is your HSA fully funded?
Funding your health savings account (HSA) can help give you a leg up in 2021 — whatever it may bring. Maximizing your account each year could help you build up your nest egg so you're prepared for expected, and unexpected, health care costs. Contributing the maximum will help you save on taxes this year and keep you comfortable next year. Learn more about the benefits of funding your account.
Know the limit to go the limit
2021 is here. Start the new year off right by maxing out your HSA contributions.
2020 HSA contribution limits:
- $3,550 for individual coverage
- $7,100 for family coverage
2021 HSA contribution limits:
- $3,600 for individual coverage
- $7,200 for family coverage
The IRS sets guidelines for how much you can contribute to an HSA each year. Please note that the federal income tax filing and payments deadline has been extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. This deadline extension only applies to federal taxes for all states other than Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, where the federal deadline was previously extended to June 15, 2021, due to winter storms.
Taxpayers should check their state’s tax filing deadline as it may further vary by state. As a result, the amount of time that individuals have to make 2020 health savings account (HSA) contributions has also been extended to May 17 (or to June 15 for TX, OK and LA). Learn more.
